Update 2015
As ever, it's busy for me. Working full time and managing projects, commissions and adult life is always demanding more hours than there are in a week, let alone a day. But, I keep on top of it and produce more work every day. So, without further ado take a look at the gallery!
As you've probably already noticed, it's a lot of WIP and building up of portfolio work, I've invested in a lovely Huion drawing tablet (much better value than the Wacoms in my opinion) I am filling this gallery with the progress pics to show just how much work is going in to these pieces as best as I can.
The dreadnought is an all digital drawing from reference.
The Judge Dredd cover art was hand drawn, and coloured from a mobile phone photograph - came out so well i decided to submit it as is. (I wanted the rougher edges and dirtiness of the hand drawn to come through)
Master Chief was the first thing i drew on the GT190, and i gotta say, was a lot of fun to do, bit of trial and error as you can see!
The rest.. well there's some practices, some projects. Lots of fun.

It's Been a heck of a year...
Wow, it's been a long time. I've finally found a small amount of time to update and get this site up and running again. Not huge amounts of changes to circumstance, promoted in my role at work, but the same line of work there.
Work in the states dried up, but was a success for me. Currently working on private commissions and building up the portfolio.
With projects in the works, setting up a bid for a contract to produce animation for TV is on the to do list at the moment, exciting.
I'll be archiving a lot of work already on here soon, so expect some changes. Lots of new pieces to come, from hand drawn commissions to digital graphics and web work, animation testing, character design and development, photography, research, comic strips, aerial footage *yes that's right drone! - and much more.

Jan 2014 was already so long ago.
Sorry it's been so long, a year exactly to be correct! Amazing how time flies.
A lot has happened, my career has taken off and i was soon made a Senior Techy, so my time is sparse. I am still working freelance, and doing/offering a lot more, the animation side has slipped but i am currently refreshing my skills ready to teach as an opportunity has arisen to hold small classes for pupils at local schools (years 5 to 11) to give small talks and workshops - Should be fun!
I am now working on anything and everything from illustration for Nuggetry magazine, with monthly comic strips as well! I also produce websites, including coding and implementation, along with my career this is keeping me very busy.
I have also taken a great interest in landscape, astro and aerial photography, utilising a DSLR and Go Pro Hero 2 Camera to produce some great shots, some will be in the gallery, but the rest can be found at; www.Flickr.com/sitye
I am still located in Bristol and intend to stick around a while yet.. ...but who knows!
Here's a small selection of the work released and work unreleased in the last year, enjoy and as always feel free to get in touch.

Update
So yeah, with a full time job, part time freelance and life in-between i've got to apologize that i've not updated sooner, but alas, a quarterly update is my solution.
So what have i been doing?
Well... I now work at a local secondary school as an IT Technician, i also do (and am negotiating for more) graphic design and illustration for the school
I am now working freelance on many projects including published illustrations for Nuggetry magazine, bespoke commisioned art pieces (see images below)
a rebranding of the school i work in, webdesign and even some tattoo flash art work for friends and customers.
It's a busy time indeed, so i will be keeping you up to date once every 3 months from here on. With the occassional sporadic update when something big happens.
Thanks to all that have made 2013 great so far, Jack Daniels, i owe you big time for my first big break stateside! Ian Hopkins for selecting my 'Honk' poster, and to everyone else i've had the pleasure of working with so far, lets hope this spring/summer goes just as well and better still!

Got the pens out again!
Been trying to develop some new skills and styles with the drawinging pens and promarkers i've had sat, waiting, begging to be used.
Here's what happened when i did just that!

Just something I doodled while on the phone today... ...carried away?
COMICS WERE THE FUTURE!
More and more progress made on working in collaboration with a writer to illustrate some stereotypes for a piece he's working on. Can't give too much away at the moment as it's not gone to print yet but, watch this space!
The most I can say is that it's 10 illustrations of stereotypical characters you may face in your day to day activities if you were to live a lifestyle of a particular persuasion for a popular magazine published in LA, written by a guy in California and illustrated by me now :D cool huh?!

COMICS ARE THE FUTURE?
Just a little sneak peak, facebook fans may have seen more!
I've recently started full time work again, so have hardly had a chance to report in and tidy this site up. One of the perks of where i work is the new hosting, that's right, you can now visit this site at www.Si-Tye.com - Now i need new business cards - damn it!
So yeah, not a huge amount of design or creative work has been done for my own personal practice this summer, but there is a super secret exciting new project in collaboration with a colonial cousin across the pond that will be announced shortly!

POST DEGREE WORK! ENJOY!
Keeping busy...
Lately I've been doing some inspired digital character designs, again, just to keep up and improve skills, limited time scale (approx 4 hours max)
Take a look!
Bonus Points if you can guess where they're from!!
I will add these were done using only a mouse and keyboard, and pre-degree work in Paintshop Pro 9

The Drummers keep on drumming...
Below were some early designs for the Drummerset™ logo, a freelance project i've been working on the last couple of weeks, after a bit of deliberation from the client it was decided to take the design into the 3rd Dimension! Below are some of the tests and final results! Enjoy!
If you are in need of any graphic design work, web design, logos, posters, album art of any format or medium, not just digital, please feel free to get in touch, all my details are on the Contact page, or email me (Simon) - [email protected] for a fast and friendly, professional quotation.

CGI is fast becoming an obsession...
Been working on a new CGI project this week, purely to test my skills and see how far i can push the Maya rendering abilities towards photo realism (turns out not far enough - VRay will be my next venture as plugins go)
To the left is the original photo i am trying to replicate and below is the progress in modelling. Still very much in it's infancy.

Freelancing pays my bills...
So as the title suggests i've been doing a bit of freelancing to pay the bills, designing a new corporate logo for a drum school, below are some of the preliminary designs, but if you're reading this and would like to discuss design work i am available for hire with very good rates! [email protected]
Congratulations to me! I won!
I've had some good news today, which is nice after not getting a job i really wanted yesterday, I won the poster competition i entered, you may have seen my entry already if you read this blog a lot, but yeah, check it out, i won! I never win! :D woo hoo!
The winning design...
The winning design...
So watching the Avengers rubbed off...
Smaaaaaaash!
Just keeping myself going in the digital painting with this quick sketch of well, lets see if you can guess!
It's still in need of a lot of finishing, so watch this space, currently less than an hour spent on it if you were wondering.
Below is a list of techniques used for the final version, all completed from drawing to final render in less than 2 hours.
Speed is the key!

Little more...
...Yeah, so I got a bit in to this and carried it on. Will be posting full progress on this one.
One colour base, light/dark tool to bring out shadow and highlights.
Altered the top layer to black out.
Added a plain background and shadow detail, along with cracks.
Added Depth of focus to foreground and back ground hands.
Added Texture bump maps to background, trousers and skin of middle ground (point of focus)
Final light adjustments and smoke effect for dust using a brush tool.

AND FINALLY HULK... ...SMAAAAAAAAAAAAASH!!
UPDATE
That's right, work in progress 2012 is complete, the site looks as good as i can get it using what i have and without spending a penny more than my precious time on it.
The background work is nearly done, designs for the packaging are complete (see images below)
AND i've even found some time to start playing with new ideas, i've been watching Archer (FX channel) and wanted to just give it a go creating a replica of the art style (it's usually vector drawn animation, but i did this free hand in paintshop pro) lets see who can recognise him!

One Sheet Update
Just a revisited version of the one sheet, ready for print. Not gonna hold copyright on this so if you want to use it to make your own poster feel free!
This version has been scaled down to 25% of its original size purely because weebly hosting is limited to 5mb per image/file.

NOSTALGIA FOR ME
This is an old animation site i thought was lost forever but happy to find it's still going strong...
You may already be aware of it, and some of his more 'mainstream' work, but all of this is hilarious in my books!

ONE SHEET CHANGES
Just a few minor changes, bit more detail, clearer to read, higher DPI for print. Not much to see here.

Hi Res One Sheet
This rather incredibly hi res version may take a while to load so i have included a low res A3 print version for any fans. There are still one or two characters missing but as they've not been drawn at all yet (or are only in hard format) they sadly missed this line up.
Anyway, enjoy the poster, feed back welcome and yeah it's a funny size at the moment, as it hasn't gone to print. The clouds ideally would be embossed too. And was going to try a 3D glasses supporting poster but was let down by the technology at the last minute! USELESS!
Enjoy!

Oh and sometimes I like to just draw things...
Actually i was c0mmissioned to design this as a tattoo for someone... ...but still, really, secretly i enjoyed this :D
Shows to be scrapped. Crowds form in protest.
So as i've taken a look at what i have so far, and the brief. Well... ...The running time will be somewhat ignored if i was to carry on producing all the shows as proposed. So in favour of high quality content over high quantity (to an extent) I have decided to remove certain shows from current production.
PRODUCTION TITLE:
Work in Progress -'There's never anything on!'
PRODUCTION SUBTITLES:

Continuity All Complete Job Interview (?) Super Nanny (behind the scenes) SCRAPPED
Emergency Stop 1 complete, 1 in production Mario Catwalk 3D In Production
Futbalinio RE-editting Sugar Tits Commercial Complete
Excited In Production
Due to these changes the site will be going under a slight facelift, pages and links may die as a result and video uploads will be delayed for a while but hopefully I should have it done by the time you read this sentence anyway!
In other news, i am pleased to announce the development of a new short! In light of feedback, recieved before christmas, that all my content is of an adult nature and realising the limitations this may cause in the future; i've turned my attentions to developing a very short (5 second) clip titled; 'Excited'. It's a hand drawn 2d, hand coloured (yeah that was a bore) with digital FX and comp. As soon as the site is up to scratch i will start uploading sneak peaks - Sadly however the line test machine in the studios was playing up and the early test footage was lost due to a corrupt partition on the hard drive failing to save correctly (i think) so line tests for this animation are lost in the ether but hey ho, you'll get to watch the first colour test animations almost as soon as i will! :D
Keep at it guys and girls, the end is nigh!

Just a few links to freeware and commercial software i've found, some pretty neat stuff going on out there, JLipsync got me these but sadly i cannot get it to run, something about 7 (64bit) and Java applications that disagree i think. Will keep going as lipsyncing for futbalinio is in dire need of improvement. If anyone out there has a better suggestion (magpie is no longer available and pro costs a fortune) Please get in touch - [email protected] - Otherwise, enjoy the links, hope they help you!

Been playing with Maya again...
Forgot how much I loved 3D modelling, starting making this arm just to see how rigging would work on a hand, very basic shapes to be honest but started playing with rendering for a laugh, looks a bit naff but it's only a play around :D
New host site for final content designs and concepts
A new concept, based on the waynes world dvd chapter selection screens that i love, whch in turn were based on the original Cable TV channel viewer. Clicking a program will play the subsequent video and display the information on that piece. Or Click the red button to view the entire program start to finish in full screen :D
That's the plan anyway, all i need now is to learn HTML and Webdesign, got 3 months or so... ...uh oh. Can anyone help? Get in touch!!

The site will be getting a minor facelift soon to make tracking the individual productions easier for you, so if you find you can't see much at the moment dont panic, i am just moving it around and throwing it all out the window in an attempt to find that one vital file in the TB's of crap that accumulate! :D
In the mean time, make a sandwich or something, and bring it to me im STARVING!

Found something!
I was recently introduced to this webcomic, the humour is somewhat out there, but absolutely hilarious, especially like the FOP GUN sketches. Just goes to show what a good idea and a simple sketch can accomplish! Check it out!

While I'm at it...
So thanks to Ian Friend, I was able to repair the issue in aftereffects haulting production temporarily on Futballinio. In the mean time i turned my attentions to the SugarTits commercial, which as i mentioned previously (see below) has gone through some drastic changes since its first concepts. This is a very rough animatic without any visual effects. As always, the video is compressed and as the audio is being rewritten this video is silent. But enjoy!
Just found this but in a hurry!
Just found this as i was closing my pc down to head out, typical, but take a look, loving the art style!

Getting up to speed...
So production has begun mid pre production - Yep, it's pretty full on.
Having to produce the full piece as they're so short storyboarding to an animatic is practically pointless, having several technical issues with the Futballinio piece at the moment, blame aftereffects not myself, it would appear that multiple layers in a 3D layout corrupt the algorythm when rendering in full resolution - desperately seeking solutions before having to go back and re-do all the lip syncing and camera work - will upload what is going wrong for evidence soon.
PreProduction is still underway, developing storyboards for the Mario Catwalk as this animation will be a collaboration with Jamie Bruun (3D modeller/animator) so i have left production to him and we meet once a week to discuss progress, changes and direction.
Other productions underway are now for the Sugar Tits Cereal advert, thanks to the musical composition provided by James Burgess, the art directorship has changed drastically and will now be a cut-out digital animation inspired by 1950's art deco, nuclear family info-ad's. Closest i can find to resemble what we have planned is the trailers for the action role-playing game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks, Fallout 3 (external link).

EMERGENCY STOP - scene 1 - complete (compressed)
Apologies for the quiet audio I think this was partly due to compression to MPeg3.
FUTBALLINIO - A sneak peak
And a timelapse 1930s graffiti story
Cool stop motion tattoo... (nothing to do with anything)
The new proposal...
So as i mentioned yesterday i've come up with a new idea.
A rough outline of the plot, is to make a 2-3 minute film that consists of a series of varied shorts, in a range of media from hand drawn to 3d. They will be humourous sartorial and quick snippets similar to that of Modern Toss (see video below)
Within these sketches i have a few ideas i want to include, such as the catwalk featuring a selection of known characters (mickey mouse, super mario etc) and to keep coming back to a program about a train journey, animated in the style of the passenger safety booklet (Fig. 1). I also want to emulate the continuity ads from E4 and bbc channels throughout as sort of 5 second jokes.
This again is ambitious so i may look into recruiting someone on to this project if they show an interest and a proven track record. Otherwise i will have to just do it alone.

The weekend.
Yeah, that's dedication im working on this over the weekend (ok i was ill friday so have catching up to do).
I am still struggling with the concept for the work this year, but inspired by some E4 Stings, and lesser known animation Modern Toss, I am now thinking of doing a series of varied shorts. Again this would help me make a working show reel, and a film. I want to keep the catwalk in, but i was thinking of making a 2-3 min film that acts like a channel changer on tv, flicking back and forward through adverts, continuity announcers etc etc. That way i can work a bit of humour in, different settings and multiple character situations which is ideal.
Scripting will begin today, so watch this space as it'll be up soon! I will also be adding new photos to the site so you can take a look at production ideas, and my new plasticine head that has taken a few hours more than i thought it would but looks amazing! :D

Day 2...
So I've been up all night thinking about what the hell I am going to do, then, while just tinkering around looking at inspirational materials on YouTube I had a entirely new, fitting and rather brilliant plan.
Inspired by the SteamPunk Couture video (http://youtu.be/C7qbvuizl94) and basing my ideas on my career aspirations, I am scrapping the plot entirely, and intend to animate in a variet of styles a catwalk show of as many characters as I can fit into 2-3 minutes! That way, I can mix medias without it looking too abstract, create a strong portfolio of character design and still make my movie showreel combo!
You may applaud my genius now. Thanks.
So to begin planning the next stages of the pre production. A full proposal needs to be written up I guess, then approach that with some rough sketches for the characters! Watch this space!

Welcome to the new blog...
Hello and welcome to the new home for all things Si Tye. This is where I will be filling the internet with all the production notes, developments, tests, sketches, random pictures, doodles, models, and a whole array of information on my latest production.
The year hasn't exactly started as I'd expected, and well, the ideas I'd compiled over the summer were somewhat rejected. The original proposal was for a 2-3 minute animated feature. A Narrated story in a noir setting (my signature style for animation) - This was fine - but my proposal to mix the media throughout production (as part of the story I should add) was frowned upon by peers, but widely accepted by other animators - interesting how the other students thought the idea of compiling my showreel to have a plot and work as a film was a good idea. This has left me feeling somewhat lost in the closet under the stairs, looking through that old box of ideas. Whether to stick to my guns, and carry on developing the idea has been circling for too long now. I have had to make a decision before more time goes to waste. I am going to create a digital 2D animation using aftereffects. I worked well with this last year and hope to incorporate more as I produce the work, ie Line testing, timing and 3D character design.
Today we discussed what careers we hope for, mine has always been character design and development for animation, games companies etc. So in order to produce a body of work that will help improve my portfolio for future employers I now need to reconsider the production of 'A Tall Tale' and look into the idea that producing a showreel of work may be more beneficial. I still want to produce a film, so looking at producing a showreel simultaneously is still on the books (a short showreel) - What I need to do is sit down and approach this with someone who can advise me which angle would be better. A Film and 10 second showreel, or a professional portfolio of design and pre-production work leading to a full length (or atleast longer than 10 seconds) showreel of work.
If anyone reading this is interested in the outcome, watch this space, and well done for getting this far!
